# Six branches and a hundred users on one IOPStor hyper-converged system

A manufacturer whose branches each held their own copy of the data now runs six sites on a single IOPStor hyper-converged system, with every employee working inside it through VMware Horizon.

## Challenge

Every branch kept its own data on its own hardware, and nothing synced reliably. The same record existed in several places with several different values, and reconciling them was somebody's job at head office. Growth made it worse rather than better: a new branch meant another set of hardware and another copy of the data to keep in step, so there was no way to add a site or a user without adding another island.

## Solution

IOPStor replaced the per-branch hardware with a single hyper-converged machine — compute, storage and networking in one box — and put every employee inside it with VMware Horizon. Nobody works on files sitting on a machine in their own building any more; they log in to a desktop that runs on that one box, against one set of data. The syncing problem was not fixed, it stopped existing: there is only one copy to be right. Opening a branch no longer meant buying it a set of hardware: the two that came later joined the machine that was already there.

## Results

Four branches became six on the same machine, with fifty people at head office and a hundred users in total, and no second system to hold in step. When Covid closed the offices, all hundred picked up the same desktop from home: the desktops were already running on that one machine, not on the PCs people had left behind. Business continuity needed no plan, because the work was never on the desks.

- **4 -> 6** — branches running on one machine
- **50** — employees at head office
- **100** — Employees in total, each on a desktop that runs on that one machine

- [A post-production company grows from 8 people to 100 on IOPStor storage](/case-studies/a-post-production-company-grows-from-8-people-to-100-on-iopstor-storage.md): Eight people passing files from hand to hand became a hundred across video editing, 3D and After Effects, working from IOPStor storage that gives each department its own pool and its own bandwidth.

IOPStor replaced it with a 100 TB NAS and a single compute node, protected by snapshots and a disaster-recovery system that keeps a copy offsite in the cloud.
